July 2017 Mediasite Administrator Update(Archive)

Mediasite Users Group meeting

Wednesday July 11 in Park Shops 130 from 1:30pm-3pm. The most important item on the agenda is discussed below.

Important: SSL Security and Mediasite recorders

Mediasite recorders should be upgraded to the 7.1.13 image (available soon) and 7.1.13 version software before the Fall semester.

Here’s why: Mediasite recorders are not compliant with the University SSL encryption standard, which is TLS 1.2. The University moved to it last Fall, which is when it was discovered Mediasite recorder software couldn’t run it.  Older versions of SSL/TLS encryptions have been deprecated due to security flaws.  Additionally, the 7.1.13 recorder image includes important Microsoft security patches related to the recent world-wide cyber attacks as well as several older known vulnerabilities.

As of version 7.1.12, Mediasite recorders can run TLS 1.2. Most Mediasite recorders did not upgrade to that version because it came out in the middle of the academic year. Because of those circumstances, OIT has essentially given Mediasite recorders a “free pass” to run earlier versions of SSL.  However with the additional security patches it is strongly recommended to move to the 7.1.13 image version.

Mediasite recorders on 7.1.xx image versions can upgrade to 7.1.13 image and recorder version via a push from the server. Details are forthcoming.
