Mediasite Administrator Update, September 2015

As part of an ongoing effort to keep Mediasite administrators on campus informed, we created this DELTAwire article specifically for you! For help with any Mediasite questions, please contact us at mediasite-help@ncsu.edu.

This article includes information on the following topics:

Mediasite Service Degradation

The Mediasite service is performing in a much more stable condition as of September 3. On Demand presentations are currently playing back at normal levels. There have been reports that publishing new recordings is slower than normal. The support team will continue to monitor the service and troubleshoot any issues. For a detailed description of the cause of the outage and the steps taken to correct it, please see the following Google doc.If you have any Mediasite related issues, please send email to mediasite-help@ncsu.edu.

Version 6 Servers

During the migration to version 7 we communicated to administrators we would keep version 6 servers running and accessible for one year. We will be disabling access to the servers for the Fall semester beginning in September and then beginning in January 2016, we will decommission the servers.

New Recorders/New Image

If you order a MSL-CSM 830-R2, RL720-R2, or RL 120 recorder, it will be shipped with the new 7.1.05 image. In addition, these recorders will need to use the 7.1.05 image and should not be re-imaged. Be aware the interface will look different than the current interface.

Mediasite Monthly Server Maintenance

The monthly Windows Updates for the Mediasite servers will be installed on Saturday, September 12 between 5 a.m.—6 a.m. The servers will be rebooted one at a time. There will be a brief outage when the database and file servers are rebooted, but no other interruptions are expected.

We are scheduled to install the Mediasite 7.0.25 server update to the servers during our Fall Break maintenance window on October 8-10, unless testing dictates otherwise. DELTA has been testing this update in our workflows and we encourage you to thoroughly test your respective workflows prior to the upgrade because only you can tell if your workflows are operating to your satisfaction. We encourage you to let us know prior to the end of September if you experience any issues. We shared information on how you can test in the July DELTAwire as referenced here if you need this information.

For further information and updates, please see Updates & Maintenance schedule.

My Mediasite Student Pilot

The My Mediasite Student pilot is now underway. The pilot will run through the fall 2015 semester. We have been very pleased with the response from instructors and their desire to use this technology as part of their course and for course assignments. We have a very limited number of slots still open out of the 250 participants. If you are an instructor and would like to use this technology as part of your course, please send an email to mediasite-help@ncsu.edu with the name of the course and section number and we will provide your class roll with access to the software and requirements to use the service.

New Remote Control Power Function

Newer Recorders running Mediasite 7.0.22+ models support remote power management which allows the Mediasite Administrator to remotely power on, power off and reboot the recorder.

In order to use this feature, the recorder must be running Mediasite Recorder software 7.0.22 or newer. The recorder must also use the appropriate Ethernet port outlined in KBA3954. Please note, switching the Ethernet port used on a recorder may have implications with your current network configuration. Please work with your network administrator to ensure the network card is configured to work properly on your network.

Configuring Wireless on Newer Mobile Units

If you receive a new mobile unit, it may appear the unit does not have wireless. The units do have wireless, however, the configuration page is now hidden. A feature request has been submitted to place a button in the application to configure the wireless network.

To enable wireless, go to the internal menu and enable “Explore”. This brings up the Windows background when you hit the “Windows” key on the keyboard. Then you can get to the standard Windows desktop.

Please note: You should only enable wireless on the recorders to access the server. Enabling wireless to access websites during a recording is strongly prohibited as it can introduce serious malfunctions on the recorder while it is recording and publishing.
