Moodle Updates: June 1, 2013

As you may be aware, software like Moodle requires regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly,  performing well, up to date with security fixes, to allow us to change settings and to add new features. We schedule regular maintenance windows to work on all of the LMS tools (usually Saturday mornings) throughout the year. Please take a look at the schedule.

On June 1 we performed maintenance on Moodle. Here are some of the highlights:

• Updated from version 2.3.4 of Moodle to version 2.3.7 to get security patches and other fixes from Moodle.org
• Replaced Moodle Book with our own version, NCSU Book which has enhanced design and functionality.
• Fixed the default setting for forum tracking, setting it to “on” for all accounts. This setting alerts you to new posts in forums and had been on in Moodle 1.9. To avoid confusion with people’s past experiences, we wanted Moodle 2 to behave the same way. This setting can be changed by going to profile settings.
• Fixed the HTML editor not toggling full screen in some instances.
• Changed default MAX_USERS_PER_PAGE from 100 to 1000. Simply put, this setting controlled how many people would show up in a list box when you are doing a search for users. If over 100 users were found, Moodle would display a “too many users found” message so you couldn’t easily select someone. This was a problem for a faculty member who was doing group assignments in a 250-student class and couldn’t see all of the students in the list box.
• Applied a patch to correct quick grading not saving under certain conditions.

There will be a few additional changes made over the summer as we continue to fine tune and improve Moodle and the rest of the LMS. Stay tuned for more updates as we have them.
