Have you ever used short 2-3 minute videos in your course? Perhaps for a weekly announcement, to introduce a lesson or assignment, to clarify a topic, or to provide feedback? A quick video is more engaging than text and is a powerful tool for building instructor presence and humanizing your course. There is no need to polish or edit these videos – a more informal approach can help build connections between instructors and students.

Try out these tools to quickly and easily create a video:

  1. Panopto: Use the Panopto button in the Moodle text editor bar to add a video to a Moodle Announcement. Click the Panopto Button > Record tab (in the pop-up window) > Launch Capture > Record (with or without screen capture). When you are done, stop the recording and return to the Moodle tab. When the video is ready, click Insert and close. Finish the announcement and post it. The Panopto recorder button is also available on Moodle pages, text and media areas, assignment feedback windows, NC State books, and more. See Embedding Video Content in a Moodle Course.
  2. Zoom: Make a recording in Zoom. Start a solo Zoom meeting and click Record > Record to cloud. During the recording, share your screen or create a video of just yourself speaking to students. Save and share the Zoom recording link in Moodle or upload it to Panopto and then share a link. Note: Zoom recordings are deleted after two years.
  3. Google Slides Recording: Use Google Slides + Screen Recording. Open a Google Slideshow > Click the Rec button (upper right corner of the editor bar) > Record new video > Use the settings at the bottom to adjust your camera location and size. Share the link with students or download it and upload it to Panopto if you are concerned with storage limitations in Google Drive.
