DELTA Hosted Two Opportunities for Teaching Success this Summer

This past summer, DELTA offered two programs where attendees shared best practices, tips and tricks, and new strategies for implementing technology in their courses. The annual Summer Shorts in Instructional Technologies and WolfWare Boot Camp: Moodle and More! participants included new and returning faculty members, staff, as well as graduate students.

Summer Shorts

The 23rd iteration of Summer Shorts focused on “Recipes for Teaching Success.” Invited participants from higher educational institutions from across North Carolina attended the free programs both virtually and in person.

The two days of the Summer Shorts program provided an opportunity for more than 100 NC State faculty and staff members as well as participants from higher education institutions across the state to share research, best practices of implementation, and pedagogy ideas and strategies. The first day of the program was held in-person at the Jane S. McKimmon Center and was live streamed to participants online via Zoom, while the second day’s program was completely online. 

The keynote speakers, Drs. Kelly Hogan and Viji Sathy of inclusifiEd, provided thoughtful and engaging insight into ways to promote equity through inclusive teaching practices. After the keynote, the session topics included sparking instructional ideas through collaborative partnerships, helping students grow their creative thinking, incorporating wellness into courses, broadening access for students with disabilities, and an introduction to 3-D scanning to name a few.

WolfWare Boot Camp

WolfWare Boot Camp: Moodle and More! is a day-long workshop focused on providing new and returning NC State faculty members and graduate students with the opportunity to become better acclimated with technologies available for usage in their courses. WolfWare Boot Camp was offered  online only on Monday, August 15 and in-person only on Tuesday, August 16. The same content was presented on both days. 

To better serve attendees, each day of this year’s WolfWare Boot Camp was divided into tracks to provide material more relevant to the individual participant. The “New Faculty Track” introduced several core technologies essential to crafting successful courses, including an introduction to WolfWare and getting started with Moodle. The concurrent “Returning Faculty Track” focused on navigating the changes encountered in the new version of Moodle 4 and introducing ways to encourage engagement in synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid courses. 

For afternoon sessions, participants could select between the “Course Design Track” and the “Engagement Track.” Topics included organization and layout of your course, creating a “just right” video, digital accessibility, as well as ways to implement lesser-used yet highly impactful tools, including Top Hat, H5P, and PlayPosit to better engage the classroom audience. 

Although WolfWare Boot Camp sessions were intentionally not recorded, a number of Summer Shorts recordings are available to members of the NC State community. You can find these recordings on our Summer Shorts 2022 website.
