Teaching Strategies for Online Group Work

As an online instructor, working with groups presents a special challenge. Problems in working with online groups are not unique, and concerns about working with student groups in both face-to-face and online environments are certainly expressed to me by other faculty. While difficult to manage at times, I am a big believer in teaming students for certain assignments, because the ability to collaborate with others and the inevitable collaboration and project management experience that comes in working with multiple individuals on an assignment are skills as valuable as the other content that students will take away from my course.

Signs of Success

If you’ve ever been to DELTA’s Venture II office on Centennial Campus, walking off the elevator, you’ve inevitably noticed an illuminated aluminum NC State University “brick” welcoming you to the space. What you might not have noticed is the small sign next to it that reads “Designed by Trent Huffines, Student Designer.”

Behind The Curtain

Pay no attention to those people behind the curtain. Wait! Actually, you should since they are DELTA’s own Laura Stephenson and Larry Evans— the distance education academic technology team. They were behind the successful live broadcast feed of NC State University’s 14th chancellor installation on Oct. 26 at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C. There were 874…

Wimba Create (formerly Course Genie) License Expires 11/30/2010

The campus-wide license for Wimba Create (formerly Course Genie) expires on November 30, 2010 and will not be renewed. There is not enough use of the software on campus to justify the expense of maintaining the license. Unfortunately, Wimba recently changed their licensing policy and single-user licenses of Wimba Create are no longer available. Therefore,…

SLOAN-C Conference Wrap-up

On Wednesday, November 3, I found myself at the RDU airport at 6:15am (not sure how I got there, it was early!) going through security and then waiting for my flight to Orlando on my way to the 16th annual SLOAN-C conference. After an uneventful flight (my favorite kind), and a shuttle to the hotel,…

Quality Matters and Course Evaluation

Over the years, DELTA has helped many instructors by reviewing their courses and offering suggestions for improvements. As a next step towards ensuring the quality of online courses, DELTA has been working during the last year to define and establish a course evaluation process for both fully online and blended (face-to-face and online) courses. The…
