Internal Training Service Creates New Opportunities
WolfWare Internal Training and Development launched in 2017 to support departments, faculty and staff in developing and maintaining online, non-credit, no-fee courses and trainings using a project space in WolfWare.
“This free service provides faculty and staff the opportunity to create and house internal training courses for university audiences. With this service, you are able to access specific training guides and resources, an instructional designer, an instructional technologist, and WolfWare tools,” explained Instructional Designer Jesse Blanck.
Blanck and Instructional Technologist Suzanne Edmonds make up the WolfWare Internal Training and Development team and have been hard at work this past fiscal year with consultations, follow-up meetings and more.
In 2018-2019, the team worked with 11 departments and divisions to create a variety of trainings, courses and projects.
Some of the clients this year include Office of Finance and Administration, University Human Resources, Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the College of Veterinary Medicine, Office of Research and Innovation, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
The WolfWare Internal Training and Development team also helped the Office of Information Technology (OIT) develop a mandatory Data Security Training that every NC State employee completed. Their work included helping to establish a Moodle space and solving problems with the SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) package.
For some clients, an introduction to Moodle and WolfWare is all they need to get started. For others, they may require help creating and organizing content.
“And most of the time, they want us to review their courses and test different elements that they’ve created,” said Blanck.
“We spend a lot of time troubleshooting, problem solving and testing course elements. We also spend a significant amount of time creating resources for people to use,” she added.
The team created a Teaching with Moodle self-paced course that is available for faculty and staff to learn how to use Moodle on their own time. They also created an Administrative Training for Moodle course and are currently working on a facilitated online course that presents best practices for online instruction.
According to Blanck, WolfWare Internal Training and Development saw an incline in referrals from OIT’s REPORTER Project Coordinator Lucy Tiefenthaler during FY 2018-2019. Tiefenthaler referred eight clients to the team for support.
“We went from helping and doing workshops for one or two departments to working with over 10 different departments and divisions on campus,” said Blanck.
Moving forward, the WolfWare Internal Training and Development team plans to continue to develop and facilitate pedagogically sound training and professional development courses.
“We also want to increase our exposure to NC State faculty and staff so they know they have this free resource available to them,” said Blanck.
