Inside DELTA: 5 Questions with Cortney Hagans

Cortney Hagans joined the Finance and Business team at DELTA this summer as a human resources specialist. She previously worked at Campus Recreation and Wellness at East Carolina University (ECU), where she was the personnel coordinator responsible for managing the hiring, onboarding and personnel matters of student employees and graduate assistants. She also has experience in leave administration, timekeeping, payroll, benefits and training. 

In 2014, Hagans graduated from ECU with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. Her first full-time position was in Human Resources, and she discovered that she enjoyed helping student personnel achieve success. 

How would you describe your position at DELTA?

“I support staff at DELTA through recruitment, onboarding, time and leave keeping, WolfTime and the Wolfpack Wellness Initiative. Although the position comes with multiple new technologies to learn such as WolfTime, I am up for the challenge.”  

What have been some of your favorite experiences at DELTA?

“I appreciate the support from the people at DELTA, from the all-DELTA welcome email to the sense of community and family-oriented culture. DELTA staff have been flexible and accommodating from the beginning. It’s just amazing how onboarding in this virtual world that we’re in right now has been the most welcoming experience…and even more supportive than in-person onboarding in previous roles.”  

What makes your job special? What do you enjoy most about your job?

“I enjoy the customer service aspect, like when someone reaches out with an issue and I problem-solve. I also like how the Wolfpack Wellness Initiative allows me to reach the whole team in different ways and ensure that there is something for everyone. Ultimately, serving others is my passion.” 

A mentor once told Hagans, “Our job as a business team is to do what we do so that they can focus on what they do.” 

Hagans tries to implement this advice every day to ensure that DELTA staff can focus on student success and digital innovation rather than administrative concerns.

What do you like to do outside of work?

“I enjoy crafting and am a true DIYer. I like making all types of things, from party decor to shirts and cups.”

“I also like to event plan, create artwork for my home and read. A recent favorite is Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know by Adam Grant.” 

“My other primary activity outside of work is spending time with my two-year-old son, Kylan.”

What is something about yourself people may not readily know?

“I’m very introverted, but I’m always in situations where I have to step outside of that tendency, especially if I know I have a full day of meetings. I like to really observe and process before voicing my opinion. Afterward, I go home and have some alone time.”
