“While teaching an online course can be exciting, the online teaching environment can require faculty to commit significantly more time than they would for a face-to-face class. Unless faculty are provided specific strategies that match their teaching and learning styles, they are in jeopardy of over-committing to the online teaching workload. This can lead to frustration and disillusionment with the potential of online education.

Lawrence C. Ragan, Director, Faculty Development for the World Campus, Pennsylvania State University

Larry is charged with directing the design and development of a wide range of faculty development services and systems. He has presented internationally on the topics of instructional design, multimedia development, faculty development issues, and instructional design for distance education. His current areas of research include the articulation of strategies, techniques, and methods that faculty can use to manage their online teaching workload and the definition of the core competencies required for online teaching success.

Paula Bigatel, Instructional Designer, Penn State World Campus

Paula has served the university in several capacities, including teaching online pedagogy courses to adjunct faculty. She has developed and delivered various faculty development workshops targeted to help faculty develop skills in areas such as workload management, online assessment strategies, and providing effective feedback.
